Fun day with Sidetrip!

We were picked up On Time by Peter and Alex. They were fun, friendly and informative. They showed us many sights and gave a lot of info. They were very knowledgeable about both Hungary and Slovakia. They made the ride fun. When we stop, they knew a lot about the places and one of them stayed with us at all times to make sure we didn’t get lost. I was sorry that we won’t be having any more tours with them but if I come back, they will definitely be who I ask for. I highly recommend them. Fun tour. Very nice people.

What we'll do
We stop by the Danube River to take in one of the most impressive churches not only in Hungary but probably the whole of Europe. Esztergom Basilica is a masterpiece of sacral architecture from the 19th century. We have a chance to admire the Classical style church from both banks of the Danube River. We also stop for lunch (not included) in the city of Esztergom.

Esztergom Basilica is located on the Danube River in the city of Esztergom. This city was the most important city in Hungary in medieval times. It was a royal residence and the heart of the state before Buda’s rise in importance. The many invasions to this area, first by Mongols in the 13th century and later Turkish invasions in the 16th and 17th century destroyed the old Esztergom. The city has been rebuilt again and again, attesting to the resilience of the people who live here.

During the tour we walk around the Old Town of Györ. It’s famous for Baroque style houses and a fabulous Town Hall from 1900. Györ is known for many of its churches that remind us of the 1000-year Christian history of Hungary. We’ll wander around the narrow streets and learn about Hungarian history.

Györ is one of the most important cities in Hungary. The city has a population of about 130 000 people. It’s located on the Danube River. The river has brought people, trade, and wealth to the region throughout history. In the 18th century the city prospered and that is when most of the beautiful Old Town was built. Despite heavy damage to the city in the Second World War Györ has been extensively renovated since the 1970s.

A really lovely tour and attentive guide!

I booked this tour with my aging parents and highly recommend it as a stress-free way to spend a day visiting some of the more difficult to reach attractions. Martina, our guide, was very kind and attentive to our needs, pacing the trip perfectly for my parents and making a genuine effort to bring us to places that matched our interests. Beyond sharing tidbits of local facts and trivia, she also patiently answered our touristy questions, directed us to some delicious local eats, and just made the day pass by in a flash. This was my first time using Sidetrip and it was truly a lovely experience. I wouldn't hesitate to book another trip in the future, and definitely enjoyed leaving the logistics, planning and driving to more expert hands.

Highly recommend Martina as your guide! A group of five of us took the took the tour from Budapest to Bratislava. Beautiful stops along the way. Martina was very knowledgeable on every stop and so friendly.

Minimum numbers for group size apply. There is a possibility of cancellation even after confirmation if there is not enough passengers to meet requirements. In the event of this occurring, you will be offered an alternative tour or a refund. The Sidetrip team will also be happy to help you arrange alternative transport to your destination city.

A moderate amount of walking is involved, please wear flat shoes suitable for walking.

Meeting point

This tour offers hotel pick-up for private bookings only. You will be picked up from your hotel, apartment, or any other pick-up point accessible by car. Please provide your preferred pick-up location when making the booking.

If you have booked an open group tour, then hotel pickup is not available. The meeting point is at Erzsebet Square (Erzsébet tér, Budapest), opposite to the Hotel Ritz-Carlton. Look out for a minivan with Sidetrip logo. Our guide will meet you at the marked meeting point.

Is this a one-way tour?

Yes, this is a one-way tour ending in Bratislava. Please note that the tour does not take you back to Budapest.
Do you offer hotel pick-up/drop-off?

Hotel pick-up and drop-off are only available when booking this tour as a private tour for a single group. Open group tours have a fixed meeting point and drop-off location.
Can I take my luggage with me?

Yes! We have plenty of space for luggage at the back of our minivans. One big suitcase and one smaller bag or suitcase per passenger is totally fine. There is no extra charge for luggage, as long as you don't plan to move to the other city with all of your belongings :)
Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch is not included in the tour price but a lunch break is scheduled in Esztergom. Location of the lunch is subject to availability. Kindly let our tour leader know if you have any special dietary needs that we should take in account.
Is this tour suitable for senior citizens?

Yes! With a maximum of 8 people in each group, our guide can make sure that the pace of the tour is suitable for everyone. Just note that the tour does include some walking at the stops.
What measures are you taking against the spread of covid-19?

All our groups are limited to a maximum of 8 travellers for open group tours and in case of a private transfer it’ll be just your group in the van with our guide. Face masks are available in each vehicle upon request and hand sanitizers are placed in a hand’s reach from all passengers.
What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel more than 48 hours before the tour, your booking is fully refunded*. If you cancel less than 48 hours before the tour or in the case of a no-show, no refund is issued.

*Please note, that the credit card processing fee (1.5-3%, up to 5.9% if you paid by Paypal) charged by the third-party payment provider will not be refunded.
