About Mondsee
Located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, Mondsee is a charming lakeside village with a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. The area was once home to ancient pile dwellings, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The village gained international fame due to its stunning St. Michael’s Basilica, where the wedding scene in The Sound of Music was filmed. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Mondsee, the area is a beloved retreat for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Despite its small size, Mondsee captivates visitors with its mix of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a perfect stop for relaxation and sightseeing.

We'll visit the magnificent Herrenchiemsee Palace, the “Bavarian Versailles,” exploring its lavish gardens, stunning fountains, and grand architecture on a scenic island.
What we'll do
Step into a world of royal grandeur as we visit Herrenchiemsee Palace, often called the “Bavarian Versailles.” Located on an island in Lake Chiemsee, this magnificent palace was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a tribute to France’s Louis XIV. We’ll explore the lavish gardens, admire the stunning fountains, and take in the breathtaking architecture of this unfinished masterpiece. Those interested can tour the palace’s opulent interior (tickets not included), featuring gilded halls, intricate ceiling frescoes, and the spectacular Hall of Mirrors.
For a more relaxed experience, enjoy a peaceful walk through the surrounding park, where nature meets royal elegance. Whether marveling at the palace’s splendor or unwinding in its scenic surroundings, this stop offers a truly regal experience.

About Herrenchiemsee Palace & Park
Herrenchiemsee Palace is one of King Ludwig II’s most extravagant creations, situated on Herreninsel, the largest island in Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria. Construction began in 1878, inspired by the grandeur of Versailles, but remained incomplete due to the king’s mysterious death in 1886.
Despite its unfinished state, the palace stands as a testament to Ludwig’s vision of absolute monarchy and artistic excellence. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, intricate fountains, and tranquil lake views, Herrenchiemsee remains a fascinating blend of history, luxury, and natural beauty, making it one of Bavaria’s most impressive royal sites.

Nikolai was an outstanding tour leader who truly elevated our entire experience. From the very beginning, his positive energy made everyone feel comfortable and welcome, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable trip. What stood out most was his flexibility and willingness to adapt. He happily accommodated our requested changes to the schedule without hesitation, ensuring that the experience felt personalized rather than rigid. It was clear throughout the trip that his top priority was for us to have a great time. Nikolai’s enthusiasm, attentiveness, and genuine care made a lasting impression. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a thoughtful and engaging tour leader.
This was the best decision we made while on our trip to Europe. Much better than taking the train because we were able to make additional stops that we wouldn't have been able to make if we were on the train. Our guide, Michaela, was absolutely wonderful! She was very cheerful and talkative, and she obviously loves the outdoors. One of the places that was planned for our trip, we had already seen, so Michaela offered us other options and we choose. She was great! Any time Sidetrip tours is available where we are traveling, we will definitely schedule a tour with them.
I cannot rave enough about Sarka and the incredible care she showed our group. She was a fantastic driver who got us to our destination safely and professionally every single time. When one of our participants accidentally left her purse in the vehicle, Sarka went above and beyond — she came back on her own time to return it, without a single complaint. Throughout all legs of our trip, she helped us navigate countless last-minute changes to accommodate our group, always with patience, kindness, and a calm, can-do attitude. She was truly a lifesaver and made what could have been stressful situations feel completely manageable. I honestly cannot give her high enough praise. This company is incredibly lucky to have Sarka, and we are so very grateful for everything she did for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
