Prague to Munich - 13 Best Ways to Travel in 2026

Feb. 11, 2026 by Kamila

Prague and Munich pair beautifully for travelers interested in art, history, and beer culture. While Prague enchants with medieval charm, Munich offers lively squares, museums, and a gateway to the Alps. The journey is a popular one and well connected.

Frequent trains and buses make the trip convenient, while a sightseeing transfer tour adds the option to stop in scenic towns like Regensburg and Pilsen along the way.

In this article, we explore how to travel from Prague to Munich with up-to-date info on schedules, ticket prices, and tips for choosing the best option.

1. Prague to Munich by Train

Average Duration 5.5 hours

Seven direct trains run daily between Prague and Munich, making this one of the better connected cross-border routes in Central Europe. The first departure leaves Prague at 5:43 AM and the last at 5:43 PM, with services roughly every two hours throughout the day. The journey takes around five and a half hours, and the trains are comfortable and modern, with free Wi-Fi and power sockets at every seat. There is no dining car on this route, only a limited delivery service with snacks and drinks. Stock up before you board.

Train Stations in Prague and Munich

In Prague, trains depart from Prague Main Station (Praha hlavní nádraží), connected to the city center via Metro Line C (red) at the Hlavní nádraží stop. Trains also call at Praha Smíchov station before leaving the city, served by Metro Line B (yellow) at the Smíchovské nádraží stop.

In Munich, all trains arrive at Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof), which sits in the heart of the city with direct connections to all S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines.

Tickets and Booking

Advance train tickets start at €20 and climb to €45 if you buy on the day. Trainline is the easiest place to book for international travelers. It shows prices in multiple currencies, accepts cards from anywhere in the world, and searches both Czech and German Railways in one go. Rail Europe is a solid alternative if you are planning a longer European trip and want all your train tickets sitting in one account.

Czech Railways (ČD) and Deutsche Bahn (DB) are worth checking directly, since prices for the same connection occasionally differ between the two. That said, both sites quote fares in euros or Czech crowns only and take some patience to navigate. Most travelers find Trainline quicker and easier for this route. Seven direct trains run daily, so you have plenty of flexibility, but advance fares at the lower end sell out fast. Book a few days ahead during summer or over bank holiday weekends to lock in the best price.

Insider Tip

The most scenic stretch comes early in the journey, as the train climbs out of Prague through the Bohemian countryside before crossing into Bavaria. Sit on the left side of the train facing the direction of travel for the best views over the rolling hills and forested valleys of western Bohemia in the first hour of the trip.

Average Duration 9-10 hours

Price €99

Prague to Munich is one of those routes that looks simple on a map and takes five and a half hours on a train. You cross Bohemia, pass through the mountains, enter Bavaria, and arrive having seen the countryside scroll past without once having a reason to stop.

The Prague to Munich Transfer Tour reverses that logic entirely. You leave Prague in the morning and spend the day moving west through three stops across Bohemia and Bavaria, arriving in Munich in the early evening with plenty to show for the journey.

What's Included

The open group tour departs Prague at 9:00 AM and runs for approximately 9 to 10 hours, arriving in Munich around 7:00 PM. You travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan with a maximum of eight passengers.

Your guide is a local who knows the Czech Republic and Bavaria well. The stories behind each stop connect across the day. Charles IV, who built Karlštejn, also had deep ties to the Holy Roman Empire that shaped Regensburg. Your guide draws those threads together in a way that makes the journey feel coherent rather than just a list of places.

A lunch break is scheduled in Pilsen, where you can try Pilsner Urquell at its source and eat at one of the restaurants near the Old Town. Lunch is not included in the tour price.

Hotel pickup and dropoff are available for private bookings. Open group tours depart from a central meeting point in Prague and include dropoff in central Munich near Marienplatz.

The price is €99 per person for the open group tour. Private bookings are available for couples, families, and groups who prefer a door-to-door experience. Check the Prague to Munich Transfer Tour booking page to see the exact price for your group.

The Stops Along the Way

Stop 1: Karlštejn Castle

Karlštejn Castle was built in the 14th century by Czech king Charles IV to house and protect the Bohemian Crown Jewels and royal relics. Perched on a steep hill above the Bohemian countryside, it stays hidden from view until it suddenly appears high above you on the climb up.

You'll walk through a charming village at the foot of the hill, lined with small shops and cafés. The path winds upward through trees until the castle suddenly reveals itself above you. Once you reach the courtyards at the top, sweeping views over the Bohemian countryside make the climb well worth it.

Stop 2: Pilsen

Pilsen is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic and the birthplace of Pilsner Urquell, the beer that gave its name to a style drunk across the entire world. Founded in the 13th century and later shaped by the industrial boom of the 19th century, it has a lot more to offer than its famous brewery.

You'll walk through the charming Old Town, taking in St. Bartholomew Cathedral, the Town Hall, and the impressive Great Synagogue. A visit to the Brewery Museum rounds out the stop with a closer look at how Pilsner Urquell came to be.

Stop 3: Regensburg

Regensburg is a remarkably well-preserved medieval city in Bavaria, where three rivers meet and centuries of history have left barely a scratch on the Old Town. Its medieval architecture survived World War II almost entirely intact, which is why the whole city center is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You'll stroll through cobblestone streets to the magnificent Gothic St. Peter's Cathedral, then cross the Stone Bridge, a 12th century engineering feat that was once the only crossing over the Danube in the region. The views over the river from the bridge are hard to beat.

Who Is This Tour Best For?

The Prague to Munich Transfer Tour works best for travelers who are wrapping up a Central European trip and want to close it well. Arriving in Munich having spent the day at a Czech royal castle, tasted beer in the city where the style was born, and walked the streets of one of Germany's finest medieval cities is a genuinely satisfying way to end a trip through this part of the world.

It also suits anyone who finds the idea of five and a half hours on a train a poor trade for what is actually out there on this route. Karlštejn, Pilsen, and Regensburg are all places that reward curiosity, and all three are much better with a guide than without one.

You leave Prague at 9:00 AM and arrive in Munich around 7:00 PM. At €99 per person, the open group tour is a strong value for solo travelers and pairs. Couples and small groups who want hotel pickup and a tailored start time will find the private option straightforward to arrange.

Our journey from Prague to Munich

This was our second Sidetrip tour and it didn’t disappoint. Abdul was very welcoming and informative on our stops. This is a great way to go from one country to the next, although it’s a little longer, you see more sites and local areas and much better than going through the whole airport process

3. Prague to Munich by Bus

The bus is a genuine alternative to the train on this route, not a fallback. Around ten departures run daily, with journey times of around five hours and fares starting lower than the train. Two operators serve the route: Flixbus and RegioJet.

Flixbus vs RegioJet

Flixbus has more daily departures spread across the day, from early morning through to late night. Fares start at €17 when booked well in advance, though prices climb closer to the travel date and can reach €50 or more on the day.

RegioJet has fewer departures but more consistent pricing, with fares starting at €17 and day-of prices typically staying lower than Flixbus. On board you'll find entertainment screens, free hot and cold drinks, and an attendant present. For a five hour trip, that extra comfort is noticeable.

If you want the widest choice of departure times, go with Flixbus. RegioJet offers a noticeably more comfortable ride, and is worth choosing if the reduced schedule works for you.

Bus Stations in Prague and Munich

In Prague, all buses depart from Florenc Bus Station in the city center, connected to the rest of the city via Metro Line C (red) at the Florenc stop.

In Munich, buses arrive at Munich Central Bus Station (ZOB), about a ten minute walk from Munich Central Station. The easiest way to get there from the city center is via the S-Bahn to München Hackerbrücke, which is directly next to the terminal. Flixbus also operates one late night direct service from Prague to Munich Airport, useful if you are flying onward from Munich.

Tickets and Booking

Second class tickets start at €17 when booked in advance. Book directly through the Flixbus or RegioJet websites. Either website is easy to navigate in English, and both accept international cards without any issues. Popular departures fill up quickly in summer and at weekends, so booking a few days in advance is advisable

Luggage

Both operators allow one carry-on bag and one large piece of luggage stored in the hold at no extra charge. Check each operator's website for exact size and weight limits before you travel.
