Wonderful way to explore the smaller towns

Recommend this tour for anybody looking to travel from Bratislava to Budapest! Our guide Martina was very kind, patient and professional as we made our way through the streets of the smaller towns of Hungary along the way. Her driving was excellent and she was a pleasure to talk to throughout the day. The van was very spacious and comfortable, no complaints. The route was exactly as described. If the opportunity presents itself, would definitely consider Sidetrip Tours for another tour. Thank you Martina and Sidetrip Tours!

    What we'll do

During the tour we walk around the Old Town of Györ. It’s famous for Baroque style houses and a fabulous Town Hall from 1900. Györ is known for many of its churches that remind us of the 1000-year Christian history of Hungary. We’ll wander around the narrow streets and learn about Hungarian history.

    About Györ
Györ is one of the most important cities in Hungary. The city has a population of about 130 000 people. It’s located on the Danube River. The river has brought people, trade, and wealth to the region throughout history. In the 18th century the city prospered and that is when most of the beautiful Old Town was built. Despite heavy damage to the city in the Second World War Györ has been extensively renovated since the 1970s.

  • Stop 2: Esztergom Basilica

We admire the imposing and beautiful Esztergom Basilica by the Danube River.

    Esztergom Basilica

    What we'll do
We stop by the Danube River to take in one of the most impressive churches not only in Hungary but probably the whole of Europe. Esztergom Basilica is a masterpiece of sacral architecture from the 19th century. We have a chance to admire the Classical style church from both banks of the Danube River. We also stop for lunch (not included) in the city of Esztergom.

    About Esztergom
Esztergom Basilica is located on the Danube River in the city of Esztergom. This city was the most important city in Hungary in medieval times. It was a royal residence and the heart of the state before Buda’s rise in importance. The many invasions to this area, first by Mongols in the 13th century and later Turkish invasions in the 16th and 17th century destroyed the old Esztergom. The city has been rebuilt again and again, attesting to the resilience of the people who live here.

  • Stop 3: Visegrad Castle

We will explore the castle's ancient walls for panoramic views of the river and countryside, the area known as the Danube Bend.

    About Visegrad Castle

Perched atop a hill overlooking the majestic Danube Bend, Visegrád Castle stands as a testament to Hungary's medieval past. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle played a strategic role in protecting the kingdom and controlling trade along the river. Today, visitors can explore its well-preserved ruins, marvel at panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and delve into the history of this iconic fortress.

    About Szentendre

What a brilliant way to maximise a travel day!

Our guide, Alexandra, collected the 6 of us (3 couples) from our Bratislava hotel & took us door-to-door to our Budapest accommodation. We had a brilliant day! Alexandra was friendly, informative and she listened to us to understand our needs. She even stopped at a supermarket so we could grab some milk for a cup of tea in the morning! She really made the day! We saw towns in Hungary we’d never have visited otherwise. If you get the chance, take a Side Trip tour and you won’t regret it.
