Györ is known for many of its churches that remind us of the 1000-year Christian history of Hungary. We’ll wander around the narrow streets and learn about Hungarian history.
About Györ
Györ is one of the most important cities in Hungary. The city has a population of about 130 000 people. It’s located on the Danube River. The river has brought people, trade, and wealth to the region throughout history. In the 18th century the city prospered and that is when most of the beautiful Old Town was built. Despite heavy damage to the city in the Second World War Györ has been extensively renovated since the 1970s.

About Esztergom
Esztergom Basilica is located on the Danube River in the city of Esztergom. This city was the most important city in Hungary in medieval times. It was a royal residence and the heart of the state before Buda’s rise in importance. The many invasions to this area, first by Mongols in the 13th century and later Turkish invasions in the 16th and 17th century destroyed the old Esztergom. The city has been rebuilt again and again, attesting to the resilience of the people who live here.

It was the perfect way to kickstart my trip to Budapest! Wish I had done this for other routes Tour guide: Andrea (HU) Andrea never ran out of interesting trivia and engaging stories from Hungary's history. In my next few days in Budapest, I went on a handful of other tours in the city, and I already knew most of what would be said in the intros to Budapest & Hungary! All thanks to what Andrea had taught us during our Sidetrip tour. The hidden gem in this tour is a small synagogue and memorial in Szentendre that I would never have found if I had just gone by what TripAdvisor or travel blogs said. I truly appreciate that Andrea devoted time to discuss the history of the Jewish in Hungary, and made the effort to ensure that we got our facts straight (e.g. the location of the "Shoes on the Danube" memorial isn't actually where the atrocities being referred to happened). Driver: Tomas (HU) Tomas so kindly brought us to a view point with stunning (and crowd-free) vistas of Esztergom [which we were told not all drivers on this tour do]. He notably did this despite some unexpected traffic on the road. I felt safe the whole time during the drives, plus we made it to Budapest on schedule. Vehicle: icing on the cake :P it's superb It was clean, looked fairly new and well maintained, spacious and comfortable inside, and had seat belts for everyone.
Our tour went through Gyor, Visegrad, Esztergom, and Szentendre. All of these cities were great to visit and see, and were place we likely would never have seen otherwise - Szentendre was our favorite. Communication with the company was good, and the transport was nice and comfortable. The guide was great showing us around each city. Our only comment was that it would have been nice had the guide talked a bit more during the drives. She was very willing to answer questions, but we didn't know much about the areas of Slovakia and Hungary we drove through, so additional information on that part of the trip would have been great.
The tour was perfect, the van was very comfortable and our guide Andrea was very kind. I definitely recommend to take this tour, the places we visited are amazing, is a good way to know a little more about Hungary.
