During our walk through the charming old town, we'll pass elegant churches, cobbled streets, and the lively Dobó Square, set beneath the fortress that became an enduring symbol of Hungarian resistance. Along the way, we may also see the Eger Minaret, one of the northernmost surviving Ottoman minarets in Europe.

About Eger
Set between the Mátra and Bükk mountains in northern Hungary, Eger is a city shaped by centuries of conflict and faith. It became famous in 1552 when a small garrison held off a vastly superior Ottoman army. The Turks eventually took the city in 1596, leaving behind the northernmost minaret in Europe before being driven out a century later. Eger was rebuilt in a sweeping Baroque style that earned it the nickname the Hungarian Rome.
Today it is equally known for its thermal baths and wine valley, home to the famous Bull's Blood red.
We'll stop in Lillafüred, one of Hungary's most scenic mountain resorts, walking around Lake Hámori and taking in views of the fairytale Palotaszálló and the Szinva Waterfall.
What we'll do
We'll stop in Lillafüred, one of Hungary's most scenic mountain resorts, nestled among the rolling forests of the Bükk Hills. During our visit, we'll take a short walk around the shores of Lake Hámori, enjoying views of the fairytale-like Palotaszálló palace. Nearby, the Szinva Waterfall, the highest in Hungary, tumbles dramatically just beside the palace. There will be plenty of time to relax, take photos, and breathe in the fresh mountain air before continuing our journey.
We'll stop at Boldogkő Castle, a dramatic medieval fortress perched on a rocky ridge, offering breathtaking views over the Zemplén Hills and the Hernád Valley.
What we'll do
We'll stop at Boldogkő Castle, one of Hungary's most uniquely positioned medieval fortresses, perched high on a narrow rocky ridge above the surrounding landscape. As we take in the breathtaking views over the Zemplén Hills and the Hernád Valley, every angle offers a perfect photo opportunity. For those who wish to explore further, a short walk up to the castle reveals its ancient walls, towers, and viewpoints up close. Even a brief visit here offers a memorable combination of history, fresh air, and stunning scenery.
About Boldogkő Castle
Perched on a narrow ridge of volcanic rock above the village of Boldogkőváralja, Boldogkő Castle commands sweeping views over the Zemplén Mountains. Built after the Mongol invasion in the mid-13th century, it guarded the road to Košice for centuries and passed through the hands of some of Hungary's most colourful noble families. The infamous Bebek clan reportedly ran a counterfeit mint within its walls, and the poet Bálint Balassi wrote some of his finest verses in the castle's shadow.
Today, restored and open to visitors, Boldogkő houses a military history exhibition and the largest tin soldier collection in Central Europe.
