Excellent Excellent!!!!!
Csenge was excellent. We had a very enjoyable trip. It looked like time travel, every two two and a half hours we took a break and so we weren't even tired at our destination! Enjoyable 😀
Turn the wasted travel day into the highlight of your trip with stops at the UNESCO listed Vlkolinec, and Banska Stiavnica on your journey from Krakow to Budapest.

About Vlkolínec
Nestled in the foothills of the Velká Fatra Mountains, Vlkolínec is a living museum of Slovak folk culture. First mentioned in historical records in 1376, the village has remained virtually unchanged, preserving over 40 traditional wooden houses built in the 18th century.
Unlike many historical sites, Vlkolínec is not just an open-air museum—it’s a real village where people still live, maintaining the customs and lifestyle of their ancestors. Its blend of vibrant folk architecture, untouched natural surroundings, and cultural heritage makes Vlkolínec a rare and captivating destination for travelers seeking authentic Slovak history.

We’ll explore the beautifully preserved medieval center, filled with colorful Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Visit the striking Holy Trinity Square, the heart of the town, and admire the historic Old Castle and New Castle (tickets not included).
For those who enjoy nature, a short walk offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Štiavnica Hills, once a center for gold and silver mining. Whether discovering the town’s fascinating history or simply enjoying its enchanting streets, Banská Štiavnica promises a unique and memorable experience.

About Banská Štiavnica
Tucked away in central Slovakia, Banská Štiavnica is one of Europe’s oldest and most significant mining towns. Its prosperity began in the Middle Ages when rich deposits of silver and gold turned it into a thriving economic and cultural hub. The town became a center for mining innovation, even hosting the world’s first technical university focused on mining and forestry in the 18th century.
Surrounded by volcanic hills and dotted with picturesque lakes (known as tajchy), Banská Štiavnica beautifully blends nature with history. Despite the decline of mining, the town remains a hidden gem, drawing visitors with its well-preserved architecture, fascinating past, and romantic atmosphere.

We had an awesome time on our trip from Kraków to Budapest with our guide, Erik. He was very open and willing to answer our (many) questions on Slovak food, culture, geography… you name it! The drive itself was stunning and made a fun highlight out of what has usually been a boring airport day.
Our driver/guide Klara was great, super friendly and knowledgeable. The mountain scenery was amazing and we loved visiting the historic villages on the way- it was a great way to get from Krakow to Budapest. Much better than taking the train! Highly recommended.
My childhood friend and I spent 7 days visiting 5 countries in early June, and to say our Sidetrip journey from Kraków to Budapest was one of the highlights of our entire trip is an understatement. Instead of taking the train, we spent the day exploring beautiful parts of Slovakia with our guide and driver, Levi. It turned what would have been a simple travel day into an incredible adventure, allowing us to see places we never would have discovered had we simply taken the train. We visited hidden gems including Oravský Podzámok, the UNESCO village of Vlkolínec, and the charming town of Banská Štiavnica. The scenery was stunning, and every stop felt thoughtfully chosen. What made the experience truly special was Levi. He was knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and genuinely passionate about sharing his region with us. Along the way, we had fascinating conversations about history, culture, politics, religion, and everyday life in Central Europe. It felt less like a transfer and more like spending the day with a local friend. He also gave us fantastic recommendations for restaurants, bars, and must-see attractions in his hometown of Budapest, which made the next part of our trip even more enjoyable. If you’re traveling in Central Europe, I highly recommend a tour with Sidetrip. It transformed a travel day into an unforgettable experience, introduced us to places we never would have seen otherwise, and gave us memories we’ll talk about for years to come. We enjoyed it so much that we are already looking at other Sidetrip tours for future travels and will absolutely book with them again.
